In honor of Mother’s Day, I remember my own mother who passed away in 1981.
I was very blessed to have developed a great relationship and friendship with her in the years before her death. When I think of her, I remember several things:
1. She had a terrific sense of humor. Some of my fondest memories are of us laughing hysterically. The kind of laughter that builds momentum. It begins with a few giggles, becoming infectious as each of you begins to laugh more deeply. Your voice begins to rise in pitch. After several minutes, your eyes begin to water and, if it continues, you might feel on the verge of peeing because you are laughing so hard! It feels wonderfull! Your whole body is being massaged as the laughter reverberates throughout your body.
2. I never heard her gossip or spoke negatively of anyone. It wasn’t that she liked everyone, she just didn’t engage in conversations for the enjoyment of gossiping or developed the habit of speaking ill of others. I’m grateful I learned that from her because I rarely gossip. I sometimes slip into some negative comments about others which tells me I have some issues to clear.
3. She was always there for me when it mattered the most. In my work as both a coach and psychotherapist, I have heard many painful stories from people about their childhood with their mothers. I was very blessed to grow up with a mom who let me know in so many ways how much she loved me. Her death was a catalyst for my spiritual awakening into the person I have become today.
Thank you mom!
I believe that when I find myself thinking of her, that is her way of letting me know she is around me in spirit. So, as I write this post today in honor of mothers everywhere, I take comfort in my belief that the presence of my mother is with me.
I celebrate the power and healing of a Mother’s Love that each woman possesses that is encoded into our very being. Whether you have children, pets, or take on the role as a mother figure for others, share your heart with others. Spread unconditional love and compassion with everyone you meet, today and every day! Be-ing love is your nature and a powerfull gift that can create miracles in the world.
