On a coaching call with a client this morning she began, ” I have to tell you what I just did.”
What?
I just climbed a tree.
Really? How come?
She said, “I had an urge to climb. I know it’s totally out of character and I just felt I had to do it. I climbed it midway and I could have stopped right there and I decided to climb up until I couldn’t climb any father. I was alone, without my cell phone and I knew if I lost my footing and fell, I wouldn’t fall too far. I mean, I wouldn’t die! And, it’s a busy park so someone would have found me pretty soon. When I got to the top, I looked around and I felt so powerful!”
Wow - cool.
Would she have felt the same sense of power if she had only gone midway? She said yes. For her, it wasn’t just about how high she climbed, it was more about making up her mind and completing what she set out to do - climb a tree. What made this significant was that she saw herself as someone who fails to finish things and now she has one experience to challenge that “old” belief about herself.
Metaphors! I just love them.
Climbing a tree will be a great metaphor for her to reflect upon in the future to represent several things:
- Finishing something she intends to do
- Doing something that stretches her out of her comfort zone
- Taking a risk “in fear”
- Owning her courage
- Claiming her power
How do you claim your power?

I really love that she climbed a tree. I reclaimed my power by doing affirmations and writing out my goals so I can see them on a daily basis.

Hi Steve
Fabulous that you have your goals and positive statements in full view every day. Too often I hear people do that and then file it away and wonder why they lose motivation!

Hi Lorraine. Climbing trees… ahh, that brought me back to those long summers on the farm when I was a little girl on summer holidays. I haven’t climbed a tree in ages, but I’ve hugged them
When I’m conscious that I’m doing it, I recognize that I claim my power by returning to that “experimental” part of that little girl… it’s like jumping in the sandbox to play.

Hi Davina
I’m a tree hugger myself and it’s a great reminder of another way nature supports us!
Your little girl sounds adorable. What a great way to feel powerfull! I wonder is folks associate the sense of curiosity, wonder, play and freedom with their “inner kids” as a source of power. hmmmm
Have a wonderfull weekend
Lorraine
