Have you ever considered that the Universe is like a giant yellow pages available to assist you? A few months ago, a friend told me about a book called “Hiring The Heavens” written by Jean Slatter. Jean is a teacher, lecturer, and natural health practitioner who loves to help others find joy in all areas of their life. She combines extensive academic training with intuitive and spiritual guidance to support people on their path to wellness. Ah, I thought…. a kindred spirit. I had to get her book!
Here’s the premise of “Hiring the Heavens“
“HIRING THE HEAVENS introduces an employment metaphor that brings the concept of “connecting with Spirit” firmly down to Earth. With fun, familiar imagery and an easy “hiring” process, it teaches you how to recruit the resources of the Heavens and mobilize a talented and willing celestial “staff.” Discover how easy it can be to call upon the gifts and talents in the world of energy, and employ your very own spiritual workforce!”
Have you ever asked God/The Universe for help? You might have put your request in prayer, in written form, meditation, or silently? Have you kept an open mind to recognize all the ways your prayers have been answered such as synchronicities, gifts, and miracles? I believe all prayers are answered even though they might now always be what I’ve asked for - which is why I end my requests with “this or something better for my best and highest good.”Â
So, ordering “Hiring the Heavens“ seemed like a great way to gain additional assistance from the Universe and play with this idea. The book is a fast read and the concept is practical and very simple. Years ago I was inspired to think of asking for help from the Heavens by putting out a classified ad request like you’d put in a newspaper. Jean’s idea is more fun and expansive.
Using one of Jean’s suggested frameworks, here’s one of the teams I hired:
My Spiritual Joy Committee (inspired by an example in Jean’s book)
Mission – to look out for me and care for me: to make my life happier and more bountiful
Specialists hired and tasks
- Joy finder – help me find the positive and good in each experience. Highlight the blessings and gifts in my life so that I can feel gratitude and appreciation
- Comedienne – help me lighten up and not take myself or my life so seriously
- Life lover – teach me how to love my life no matter what’s happening
- Flow director – keep me in the flow of receiving abundance and money
- Director of ease – create ease for me so my life doesn’t feel so hard
- Fun director – keep me in balance so that I am working in my business AND having the time and space for people and things that nurture me and feed my spirit
- Vacation planner – handle all the arrangements for me to have a fabulous vacation this year in 2008.
- Director of wonderful surprises and gifts that make me giggle and smile
Hiring them is simply saying ” I need a…. I have an opening for… or I want/need help with” and say what it is.
You might want help with growing your business, planning a vacation, finding something lost – anything at all. Then think about all the expertise you would need. For example: If you wanted to grow your business you might want to hire a marketing director, project manager, pr director, virtual assistant, administrative assistant, copywriter,  accountant… get the picture?
Hold meetings each morning to set the daily intentions, stay open to miracles happening (letting go of how or when), release attachment to the outcome, and celebrate your successes.  Â
Or, you can do nothing formal and put out your request for help to the Heavens. It’s so much fun!
We receive blessings and miracles every day which can be so easily overlooked and dismissed. I love this concept and I use it in all areas of my life. Have there been miracles and gifts? Too many to name. I’m excited to receive what’s coming next!

I just bought the Kindle version based on a recommendation by a friend. Since it’s a rainy day in Eugene it’s a perfect day to read this book.
