Oversimplifying The Law of Attraction

I’m a believer in the synchronicity of the Universe. There was no accident that The Secret and all the buzz on the Law of Attraction (LOA) came to public view about two years ago. It got people talking about the Power of Manifestation and their role in the process. Great!
Conversation stimulates awareness which is all part of personal and spiritual growth. For anyone looking for information on LOA - there’s a ton of information.
The following is taken directly from Dr. Joe Vitale’s bestselling book, The Attractor Factor.
THE 5 EASY STEPS TO MANIFESTING YOUR DESIRES:
1. Know what you don’t want.
2. Select what you do want.
3. Clear all negative or limiting beliefs.
4. Feel what it would be like to have, do or be what you want.
5. Let go as you act on your intuitive impulses, and allow the results to manifest. In other words, to want without needing what you desire.
Here’s where I start shaking my head. Point #3 is critical in what we manifest!
Visualizations, using affirmations and other resources that only focus on helping people think differently have been around for a long time. I’ve used them and encouraged clients to add them to their toolbox. Some folks have had good success using tools that address making a mental shift. Others haven’t. Why not? In my opinion - many of the things people do to think differently and feel better don’t go deep enough to get to the heart of what’s operating beneath the surface - in the subconscious. Modalities such as Psych-K, hypnosis, and theta healing are very effective in replacing beliefs in the subconscious that hold an emotional charge.
Remember - we manifest whatever we are a vibrational match to. If you are holding beliefs and pain that is buried beneath other beliefs and behaviors you are unaware of, trying to think yourself into being a brand new person (without including the emotions as part of the transformation) is impossible!
In counseling sessions I would hear people share “ahas” about realizing something that felt like an epiphany. They were excited to discover something unknown that might bring personal healing and improve their life. They expected their new insight to magically change their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Presto, chango, alakazam!
The only thing that changed was their awareness!
People are so busy looking for magic bullets and instant gratification. They lack tolerance for being uncomfortable with their situation and keep looking for ways to get rid of whatever is undesired as fast as possible. They fail to see that every situation offers a healing and growth opportunity.
Transformation is a process not a light switch. True transformation includes shifting on both the thought and emotional level, raising consciousness and energy vibration that becomes integrated into who we become. It’s like a metamorphosis. Transformation goes beyond changing a thought, feeling, or behavior through practice and intention because we become the change we desire.
So when I hear people talking about applying the Laws of Attraction and expressing frustration with their results, I understand. Aligning with Universal Laws is not a technique you master in 5 easy steps.
If you haven’t done the inner work to clear emotions, attitudes, and behaviors that are manifesting more of what you don’t want, you’ll continue to feel frustrated and have the same results. You can’t side-step doing the inner work.
You might be able to let go of a limiting belief in an instant by making the decision then and there. You might need to do more in-depth work that requires time and effort. The more you can appreciate the process as a journey of evolution rather than an event or technique to master, the easier and more fun it can become!
As you let go of who you are NOT to allow the real YOU to emerge, the more quickly and easily you will be manifesting more of what you desire.
Just look at your life. Your outer world is a reflection of who you are on the inside. Match-match.
While I believe we are Source energy with the power to manifest our desires, wanted or unwanted, I see LOA as diminishing the relationship we have with the presence and power of God in the equation. Taking this into account, I see what’s also missing in thinking about LOA is that our soul’s intention for being here (incarnating) is growth and expansion and our human desires and intentions might be a mismatch. That’s why I include the phrases, For my highest and best good, or this or something greater when I express what I want to manifest. That ties into the 5th step.
If you aren’t manifesting more of what you want, that means you are misaligned somewhere inside. The inner work is a critical place to explore and remember to bring your connection with God (or whatever name you use) into your exploration by listening to your internal guidance system for enlightenment (your intuition, instincts, soul nudgings…)
One last comment……expecting things to fall in your lap without action on your part is not how the Universe responds to desires. Actively engaging in inspired action that is aligned with strategy will bring you rich results. In other words, listen to your inner guidance to help you choose where you need to put your attention and take action!

Hey - tell me what you think about the article. I’m all ears.

Lorraine

Hi Lorraine,
Most people miss out on this vital step - the need for emotional healing - before even starting to manifest what they really desire. They want quick and instant results.
I was like this before. It was only when I got stuck and continually frustrated that I decided to face my own inner demons. After doing tons of work on self esteem, clearing out the clutter in my mind, eliminating negative beliefs, I have to say that I’ve never felt much better than before and am in a better position to attract more positive outcomes. I share more about my journey on my blog.
But yes, I totally agree with what you are saying, having through it all myself!
Thanks for sharing,
Evelyn

Lorraine-
Thank you for the thought (and heart) that went into this articulate overview of the Law of Attraction. Your experience and your ability to cut through the clutter surrounding the me-too bandwagon of LOA is refreshing and inspiring.
Awhile back, I also posted an in-depth article about my experience and understanding of the Law of Attraction. Here’s one other point I explored . . .
“Notice How You Feel Now (and now . . . and now . . . and now . . .)
Whenever you feel bad (no matter what label you apply to the emotion) it takes discipline to develop the habit of taking a step back, finding that objective point within, and asking yourself, “OK, exactly what am I thinking here that has created this unpleasant feeling?” That’s the first step.
Once identified, the next step is to ask yourself, “How would I reposition these thoughts to attract what I want rather than what I do not want?”
Once identified, do it! Think about what you do want to create. Spend more time feeling good as a result of adjusting the attracting point of your thoughts than you spend wallowing in negative emotion. This allows you to balance the scales, and with the benefit of the buffer of time, it insures that overall, you are attracting what you really want.”
We covered many of the same principles, but just used different words. That’s helpful to me . . . when I hear several people explain the same thing, it helps me get it.
There are so many helpful aspects to LOA, it’s not easy to cover all the bases in one article, but you have done an exempary job with this post. Cudos.

Thank you so much for your heartfelt response Tupelo
Like you, I find hearing how others express their thought from a similar viewpoint helps me get a bit clearer and more solidly grounded in an idea. That’s the beauty of brainstorming and shared conversations.
Yesterday, on my radio show, my guest was Paula Langguth Ryan who wrote a gem of a book, Giving Thanks: The Art of Tithing. The show conversation was inspiring and insightful. Her book is brilliant. The book adds flavor and depth to the ideas of gratitude and generosity that aligns with LOA. http://www.blogtalkradio.com/PowerfullLiving
Many thanks for your thoughts!
Peace,
Lorraine

Exactly Evelyn,
I appreciate your echoing how vital it is to look within and face the emotions and beliefs that are a part of who we are that might not feel or look good. The journey of releasing all the things that are NOT who we really are allows the real us to emerge. That’s when we become amazing manifesters.
Your happiness and peacefulness shines through Evelyn.
Many thanks for adding your voice.
Blessings,
Lorraine

Hi Lorraine,
I echo what you are saying. Many people have taken this message of the LOA and the Secrets like having a magic wand.
I believe that just doing the surface work like positive thinking, visualization, affirmations, speak and claim stuffs will get anywhere except to just make you feel good for a while.
I am an ardent believer of inner work. Everything has to come from the root cause. If our root problems are not removed or dealt with, it will be like just cleaning our house main door and without cleaning up the interior.
But when the inner work is done properly, all those visualization, affirmation, positive thinking will certainly be easier to manifest with good results.
I also like # 5
to want without needing what you desire.

Thank for your comments Gamy,
With all the talk about LOA and hearing folks think it’s the next flavor of the month has gotten me shaking my head quite a bit.
Once people work with the synergy between thought and feeling, their manifestations of what they want will improve.
Blessings sweetie pie

LOL..:) you are most welcome honey.
I have come to enjoy calling people whom I like affectionately.
I find that this is one of my inner work I have discovered, at least for myself.
I find that very healing.
So, thanks sweetie

I find expressing affection and appreciation very liberating Gamy,
It’s time to starting saying what we mean and meaning what we say!

I really enjoyed reading your post, which is certainly more thoughtful than much of the jingoism banded around on the ‘low of attraction.’ Yes, alot of people seem to be talking about these things without much real understanding. Having said that, I don’t think it’s all that complicated - you attract what you feel at the deepest level - that’s pretty simple, I think. But as you say, getting to that deepest level can be the challenge. I think too much self analysis can be a bad thing - change can happen pretty easily: I’ve seen it in my own life and I am always optimistic about it happening for others.

Thanks Michael,
I was feeling very strong on this topic while I was writing! I believe that whatever we are in vibrational alignment with is what we manifest. Like you, I see us able to let things go and manifest easily. Sometimes the recognition of something is enough to make a shift. Other times, we might need to dig deeper so that the real “us” can more fully emerge.
I am excited about the future and the limitless possibilities.
Blessings,
Lorraine
