A few months ago, I wrote that Blog Action Day is October 15.
Bloggers and websites from all around the web will unite to put a single issue on people’s minds - the environment. Read the invitation
It’s today!
Over 9261 blogs and websites have jumped on board to spread the message to an audience of over 6,798,042.
WOW!
I’m a huge believer in being energy efficient and recycling. I now live in a townhouse complex and we have separate bins for recyclables, newspapers, and regular trash.
How long does it take to separate items so they can be reycled? Minutes if even that long. I separate glass, plastic, aluminum in minutes by creating a small area in my house to collect them. I have a section collecting newspaper, mailings and cardboard boxes.
I love the idea of knowing that I am helping the environment and the planet by committing to recycle. So, when I walk downstairs to toss the trash and I see folks who haven’t even bothered to use the bins that are alongside the dumpster to recycle, I go nuts. I admit it. I just shake my head because I just don’t get it. I want everyone to care and they don’t.
I’ve also added full spectrum bulbs in all the light fixtures . Not only do they save on energy and last so much longer than regular bulbs which makes them cost efficient too, these bulbs are also healthier on the eyes. How’s that for a win-win?
There are a bunch more things that can help:
1. Call your electric company and add wind energy.
2. Buy bags you can use when shopping to eliminate the plastic bags.
3. Lower or turn up the thermostat during the summer or winter.
I could go on and on.
Want to know what a friend of mine does when she walks her dogs in the morning?
She gets her exercise, walks her dogs and picks up trash. Each morning she sets out for a mile walk with empty bags and cleans up the neighborhood. When she comes home, she not only feels physically great she also feels good about herself knowing she has done something positive for the environment. Of course she also recycles, and loads of other things.
There is so much we can do that will help. Baby steps count. First, it begins with caring and making a a committment to do your part. Pushing for govermental bills to support the environment is a must.
To me, the planet is alive and breathing. My intent is to treat it with as much love and respect as I would another human being. The Golden Rule.
I hope this post inspires you either to begin to support the environment or to do more so that we can be more loving and respectful of the planet.
What will you commit to do today to support the environment?
PS. As of 10/17/07, Here’s what happened:

That’s exactly right Lorraine, the simple everyday steps…these are painless & practical. It has to start in the home. I also posted as part of the Blog Action Day momentum which needs to continue each day. It doesn’t take much to get informed & get active, but it goes a long way.

Amen Pamir,
It starts with just one person. My hope is that the message catches fire and spreads with a greater intensity so folks become passionate about both respecting the Earyh and ourselves. We are all connected!
Loved your post today!
Thanks for stopping by.

Great post, Lorraine!
The efforts to support the environment are easy ones. It’s all about developing the consciousness and the habits that go with it. When I go to the grocery store, for example, I sometimes see people who have brought their own bags. I feel badly for a moment because I have not brought my own. I want to, but I’ve not yet developed the habit of doing it. Your post has inspired me to put a supply of bags in my car today. Like you said, baby steps.
Thanks for the contribution you have helped me to make, Lorraine.
Have a wonderful day.

I know what you mean about wanting to do more in establishing habits Susan
I see so many ways we can inprove and grow. It’s ongoing, isn’t it? Sometimes I need a gentle nudge or a jolt to get off my ass to show up and get off the sidelines.
I am happy to be in contribution to you. Know that you inspire me too!
Enjoy this magnificent day
