I’m sitting here writing this post with a big ole grin on my face because I feel happy.
You might be wondering what happened to make me feel happy.
Nothing. Not a thing. Zippo.
I’m sitting here feeling gratitude and happiness. I just love feeling this way.
A few years ago, I had Lionel Ketchian as a guest of my radio show. The show was called Happiness Is A Decision. He has formed Happiness Clubs all over the country (maybe all over the world by now!). He teaches people how to be happy. How’s that for a life purpose!
One of the things we discussed was that happiness is a decision. An internal state of well-being that can be felt in direct relationship to something happening or because NOTHING external happened. Happiness is a feeling that can be felt independent of anything needing to happen!
It’s really about letting yourself feel the happiness that already exists within because your soul lives in a state of love, peace, and joy. Ya just gotta decide to let it in!
He believes:
~ You can be Happy right now and for every moment to come for the rest of your life.
~ Being Happy is the most powerful skill you can learn.
~ Happiness empowers greater insight in each of us - to further a collective vision of world peace.
~ Unconditional Happiness spreads incorruptible Love, and brings authentic freedom to all of creation sharing this beautiful planet.
~ It is all up to you. Happiness becomes you.
When we spoke last year he said about 16 years ago he made the decision to be happy every day. Is he successful? He says yes.
Now he admits he has his moments like the rest of us and when that happens he asks himself, “Is this more important than feeling happy? Is this worth giving up my happiness?” In response to the questions, he says he hasn’t found anything to be more important. He isn’t willing to give up his happiness for anyone or anything.
I’m not there yet. I still get caught up in my imaginary mental dramas and stressors.
Yet, I remain optimistic and eager for each opportunity to choose happiness. Today, my happiness found me!
Can you imagine feeling happy every day?
You can if you choose it.
So that’s my challenge to you (and me!).
Celebrate all your life experiences as opportunities to learn and grow.
Make a decision to be happy every day and watch all the good you attract into your life.
Here’s to letting in the joy!

Great post and a great philosophy. I love the question “Is this more important than feeling happy?” So few things are.

Hi Liz
Thanks for your comment. I have found that the more I live that philosophy, the more happiness I feel regardless of what I am experiencing. It is incredibly freeing!
I highly recommend it!
To your happiness

Everything is a choice, including happiness. However, we can only choose on what we’re conscious of. If there’s many aspects of ourselves we’re blocking from conscious awareness out of avoidance, then it is impossible to truly choose happiness at all levels. This is why surrender is so important. Surrendering completely to who we are paradoxically allows us the choice to BE who we are, in joy.

I couldn’t agree more. I initially think of acceptance rather than surrender. I see them going hand in hand in helping us to appreciate and love ourselves as we are in any moment. Letting go of struggling against “what is” frees us to choose the joy. Thanks so much for bring your insights to the conversation.
Warmly,
Lorraine

Happiness is a decision that I am making to be more and more often. Every day??? I’m not there yet. Thanks for the great article.

It’s a place to start Patricia
Beginning with an intention to be happier each day leads to consciously making that decision each day even if it’s for a few moments.
Practicing daily gratitude really helps me to feel longer periods of happiness.
Blessings,
Lorraine

Just another good content. Happiness is always been there. It’s only a matter of decision whether or not we want to be happy. But why some people preferred to be not? Is there some explanations to this one lorraine?
lorraine on 25 Mar 2008 at 10:39 am: 16
Dear Nievo
I find many people are attached to having something external happen to tap into their happiness - a response to something that is viewed as good - like receiving a compliment, being hired by a new client, buying something that makes them feel good rather than generating the state of happiness inside regardless of what happens outside in their life.
I don’t think people realize they create their own happiness and do not see they have the choice to change their attitude and experience. To see and do this takes consciousness- awareness. Another reason is that we become accustomed to living a certain way even if it means feeling unhappy. We learn how to survive in that state without realizing it can be different.
This could be a rather lengthy answer that goes deeper. Do you get the gist of this?
Cheers,
Lorraine
