Are there some people or situations in your life that cause you to react with anger or feel frustration? Do you find yourself revisiting things that have happened in the past that are upsetting and keep ruminating over the events in your mind so that your emotions become intensified? I call that a mind trap because we go ’round and ’round without feeling much relief or resolution. We drive ourselves nuts!
Someone cuts you off while you’re driving, your computer goes down, you have a conflict with a friend, a client fails to hire you, your cash flow is tight…. and you kick into high gear with your thoughts and feelings going in all directions until you feel pretty bad, right? Exhausting, isn’t it?
If you can relate to getting caught up in that mind trap (and most of us can!) you might not know much energy and inner peace the emotional turmoil costs you. Tons, actually. The only one who really suffers is you.
Reactions do not change the outcome of what has already occurred. Your thoughts and feeling make no difference in changing what has already happened. You have the power to affect what happens next as long as you are able to accept the present moment instead of struggling against it.
Because…..It is what it is.
Not good or bad, right or wrong. It just is.
So, the next time things don’t go your way, and you become aware of mounting stress and irritabilty, take several deep breaths and exhale slowly. Remind yourself it is what it is. Practice accepting the present moment because the only moment you have is NOW. Let go of any hopes and expectations that are unrealistic. Save your energy for things that are more pleasurable and productive.
Have trouble letting things goooooooooooooooo?
10 things to help calm you down
1. Take several more deep breaths
2. Focus on something you’re grateful for
3. Do something that brings you pleasure and joy
4. Meditate
5. Take a walk
6. Cuddle with a pet
7. Read something inspirational
8. Take a bath
9. Do a mundane task
10. Use soothing self-talk (or call a friend)
When you accept what is, options and possibilities become more apparent because your mind and heart become uncluttered with inner turmoil. Clarity and inner strength have a chance to emerge and guide you forward.
Your call to action:
You can guess, right? For the next 30 days, practice acceptance of what is. Be open to recognize the gifts of each experience that comes your way to help you grow.
Watch what happens in your life when you flow with the moment rather than pushing against it. ![]()
