Business Success Tip #4 – Focus on the Rewards

I awoke this morning to look at my intentions for the week. To me this is not a to-do list. That’s one way of looking at it. Quite frankly, to-do lists are boring and seemingly endless. Instead, I look at my week by thinking about what I desire that will make me feel good.
I’m a big reframer. What that means is looking at things from multiple perspectives. If I’ve got something on my list I don’t really enjoy or want to do that needs to be done, I focus on all the benefits I’ll receive from doing it. Putting my attention on what makes me happy is a much more compelling reason to do it. Here’s why….
No one really enjoys doing things they feel they “have to do or should do.” Not very motivating, is it?
Let’s say you want to grow your business and that means doing more networking or cold calls. You might find that aspect of your business a drudgery or fearful (rejection, the unknown). Instead of worrying or dreading the details of the actions, imagine approaching it from a different perspective.
Let me explain…..
First you might approach networking as a game. Think of mingling with folks to have interesting conversations rather than making a sale or needing to “look good“. Some of the conversations might be funny, informative, or inspirational. They might be prospects or folks who could be cheerleaders for you. They might become resources for your data base. They might become friends. Who knows what might come from meeting folks when you take the pressure off of having to be “ON”. Just show up and be your terrific self!
Next, imagine fast forwarding six months to one year ahead in your life and dream with me…..
You’ve been out there networking and making calls to warm leads. Your business has increased in ways you desire. Put your attention on all the rewards you are experiencing as a result of your efforts.
Perhaps you:
- Landed a huge client and additional revenue will help you pay off some bills.
- Are now working smarter not harder
- Joined a dance class to learn salsa
- Increased your network so that referrals are beginning to come.
- Feel better about yourself and your business.
In other words, focus on all the benefits you’ll receive by achieving what you desire rather than on everything you HAVE TO DO to get there.
- Notice what you are thinking a feeling.
- How has your life changed?
- Who have you become?
Feeling happy about your results will naturally pull you forward to take the actions to get there.
Play with this idea:
Pick one thing you have on your plate for this week and focus on the rewards you’ll receive from accomplishing it. Watch (and feel) what happens!
