What’s Your Learning Edge?

I just returned from a business retreat which was great fun and lots of work! I flew to Chapel Hill, NC to meet with a business team I am affiliated with and we spent time talking about learning edges.

Each person was asked to share a learning edge. Several of the group just looked around with a look of confusion, myself included. What the heck did that mean? Learning Edge?

Did it mean discussing a weakness?
Were we focusing on specific talents or strengths?
Did it mean turning a weakness into a strength?

We really talked at length to get to the heart of this question – what’s your learning edge?

What was meant by the question was this:

Consider the passions you have for learning. Passions might include:

  • Deepening your skills
  • Personal development
  • Expanding your awareness/enlightenment
  • Attracting prosperity
  • Building more meaningful relationships
  • Having more joy
  • Making a difference in the world

Have you noticed that the list above might also be a person’s core values?

Learning edges stretch us to be our best. Learning edges can encompass both strengths and challenges. They are places in our lives where we bump up against people or things. They invite us to step out of our comfort zones; to push beyond barriers so that we become more than we are.

Here’s one of my learning edges:

This year I declared I was moving away from playing small to playing a bigger game. That includes letting go of “playing it safe” and being willing to be more visible and vulnerable out in the world. One of my strengths is courage in the face of fear (that’s why I focus so much on fearbusting as my brand!) My learning edge is using my courage and confidence to step up and out in a bigger way. Self-discovery, collaboration, and having a strong community of support are some key elements that keep me strong as I navigate through this edge into what’s next.

So, what are your learning edges? Play with this and see what you discover!

Hi Lorraine! As always, it was a thrill to see you at the retreat in Chapel Hill. I love your topic about learning edges.

I’ve been playing around with one of my learning edges — “telling the truth” without blame or judgment *and* with the intention of love and healing. One of my values is integrity, and while I abhor dishonesty, sometimes withholding the truth can be just as harmful. I have been focusing on “telling the truth” as best I know, see, and feel it, and it has been a blast watching people grow and start to make huge shifts. Coming from the South, one of the things we’re taught from birth is to “be nice.” I’m learning that being truthful allows for growth, creativity, and healing. Being nice many times is good but can be stagnating in some situations!

    Hey Diane!

That’s a great learning edge. Integrity is one of my highest core values too. I find truth telling is a key element in being authentic. Really pushes against those edges that tell us that being honest and real will cost us too much in relationships and our business. So untrue!

    You go girl!

Good point! After I wrote on your blog I thought of something else. What keeps us from telling the truth? Fear of rejection, fear of looking stupid, fear of not having all the answers, fear of conflict — hmmmm lots of fear! Sometimes telling the truth means that we lose friends, but not telling the truth keeps us locked into a relationship built on less-than-solid ground, and that’s not good enough for me.
