“Leadership is not magnetic personality – that can just as well be a glib tongue. It is not “making friends and influencing people” – that is flattery. Leadership is lifting a person’s vision to high sights, the raising of a person’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations” – Peter DruckerÂ
I was recently hired to do a workshop for a women’s business group on the topic of Leadership Mastery. So, I started looking at the qualities of extraordinary leaders. I think we’re all leaders although; many folks are more like managers than leaders.
Whether you run a company, lead a team, head a household, sit on a committee, or work with people to achieve a shared goal, what kind of leader are you?
Below are nine key qualities of great leaders:
1. Vision. They have the ability to articulate and communicate a compelling vision that mobilizes others to cooperate for shared aspirations and achieve results.
2. Compassion. Great leaders show empathy. People need to know they are valued for their efforts and they have a role in the success of an organization, project or activity.
3. Courage. Leaders are willing to make decisions and take action that might be unpopular or risky. Demonstrates an unwavering resolve to do what must be done, despite difficulties.
4. Humility. They demonstrate a compelling modesty and acts with quiet, calm determination. They actively credit others for success by recognizing accomplishment, collaboration and teamwork skills.
5. Inspires others to be their best. Leaders champion others’ development. They recognize each person has something to offer; encouraging and motivating others to develop and express their unique strengths and talents. Their standard is excellence rather than perfection.
6. Humor can be as important as communication. Laughing together creates a bond of trust and ease among people within a hectic work environment. Whether you work alone or with others, being able to inject lightness can be a great stress reliever than leads to increased productivity and satisfaction.Â
7. Kindness. Leaders understand that people need to feel respected, appreciated, and rewarded for their efforts. Simple acknowledgements such as, “Thank you” and “Please” go a long way to earn people’s respect, cooperation, and loyalty.
8. Accessibility. People respond favorably to personal interactions with leaders. Leaders who make themselves available to others send a simple, yet powerfull message, “See, I’m just like you. I support you. We’re in this together” can solidly unify a team.
9. Patience. Great leaders understand that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Keeping their attention on the desired result (visions), they move forward with deliberateness and focus.
