A few weeks ago I was a guest on Maggie Mistal’s radio show, Making A Living with Maggie, based in NYC. It was a hoot.
She is one very savvy lady who really understands the challenges people face in their careers. So, I asked her to submit a short article for my blog!
Read on for Maggie’s article…..
In my coaching practice, I come across clients of all backgrounds, levels and ages.
Consistently, they come to me believing that they MUST go to school in order to make a successful career change. I’m here to dispel that thinking. Getting a degree can actually get in the way of figuring out your ideal career.
So BEFORE you go back to school, TALK to people in the career you want and MAKE SURE a degree is necessary. This way, you’ll save yourself money and precious time. Make a list of your skills as well. You’ll most likely realize that most of what you’ve been doing – communicating, organizing, managing – all transfer into your new field. And if you’re planning on going back to school to get a break from the daily grind, think again.
You might be better off spending your money on a trip around the globe.
I had a client who took 10 months off from Corporate America to travel. He studied Spanish and created a widespread network. Now, he’s fluent in a second language and is a sought -after resource for international projects. And the clincher - he doesn’t have school loans to pay off! Schooling can be part of the equation for your next career change, but it’s not the only path. You may already have everything you need to get into the career of your dreams!
